Microsoft Surface Go 3 Review A Compact Tablet With Laptop Aspirations

Microsoft Surface Go 3latest and most affordable tablet Although there is no shortage of Windows laptops, removable 2-in-1s are still rare and often cost premium.

This makes the Surface Go 3 more attractive as it has a lower price point than the Surface Pro lineup. And it is very sensitive, hence the name.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 is basically a Windows tablet, which can be converted into a portable computer with optional keyboard attachments.

Think of it as a Microsoft version of the iPad, but you are using the full Windows desktop you may be familiar with. It can be an attractive solution for anyone looking for a compact computer that can meet both work and entertainment needs, such as content usage. Is Surface Go worth it yet? Let’s find out.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 design

Due to its 2-in-1 integration, Microsoft Surface Go 3 works much better as a tablet than most Windows laptops with 360-degree handsets. It is about 8.3mm thick and weighs 544g, which makes it thinner and lighter.

It can be easily carried with one hand. The matte gray finish does not attract fingerprints, and the metal body feels strong and well-integrated. When used in portrait mode, you will find power and volume buttons on the right, with a headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, and a Surface Connect ID port at the bottom.

The latter is used to quickly charge the tablet and connect it to other devices, but the Surface Go 3 can also be charged with a C-type port.

The left side of Microsoft Surface Go 3 has keyboard-enabled communication points. Unlike most tablets, the Surface Go 3 has a built-in kickstand that gives you many usage options. Hidden behind the stand is a MicroSD card slot, which is easy to miss as there is no text or marker to indicate its presence.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 has a 10.5-inch full HD touch screen (1920×1280) with 3: 2 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Light levels are great with bright and vibrant colors. The bezel around the display is compact enough to give enough space to rest your thumbs while holding the tablet.

There is a 5-megapixel webcam, as well as an infrared face camera for Windows Hello. The Surface Go 3 also has an 8-megapixel rear camera. You also get cuts on both sides of the bezel on the front stereo speakers.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 Performance and battery life

I have been using Microsoft Surface Go 3 for a few weeks at work and for fun, and I can honestly say that it easily achieves its intended purpose. I can’t speak for a basic alternative, but the one with the 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM is perfect for basic computer tasks like writing, going to video calls, answering emails, and even a little Photoshop.

Windows 11 works fine, though you may need to slow down a bit. In my experience, this has always been the case. It became apparent when I woke up Surface Go 3 and I was constantly on the lookout for the Windows UI. Hard applications like Photoshop take longer than usual to load, although this has worked well for me once it has started and is running.

Without a keyboard, Microsoft Surface Go 3 makes for a decent tablet. Windows hurts a bit to use it without a stylus, and the lack of tablet-enabled apps in the Windows Store doesn’t help either. However, in terms of content, the built-in kickstand saves lives. You can set the tablet down at any angle, anywhere, and start watching it.

The Surface Pen is useful for taking notes or drawing, although I am not a stylus user so I did not end up using it too much. One feature of the tablet that I remember in Windows is the ability to turn off the display without putting the whole device to sleep, which would allow the use of settings such as listening to music.

Surface Go 3 works easily as a production machine once you have attached the keyboard. Setting it all up was not as easy or comfortable to use on my thighs as a normal portable computer, as the Cover Type keyboard has some flexibility and a sharp kickstand edge often digs into my thighs after prolonged use. It works best when placed in a stable position, however. Keyboard keys are very comfortable for you to type in, with the back light up. The glass trackpad is also very nice.

Normal games go well, but anything with heavy 3D graphics is struggling. Fortnite, for example, was unplayable despite its reduced image quality and resolution. Asphalt 9: Myths were languages in other places as well.

The sound from the stereo speakers is loud and clear. The 1080p web camera is also excellent, and the video is clean even in a dimly lit house. The rear camera has autofocus and is ideal for periodic photo or document scanning.

Microsoft says the Surface Go 3 can deliver up to 11 hours of single-charge operating time, which is already very reliable in my experience. With continuous use, I was able to walk four and a half to five hours, but when I took a break in between, I was able to stretch up to seven hours. With a 10.5-inch tablet running Windows, it is not cheap, but it is far from ideal.

I have used this tablet with a connected keyboard most of the time, so without it, you may gain extra battery life. With heavy workload, unhealthy use, and a strong battery profile, you may end up a full day of work with a single charge, but it can be difficult.

In our Battery Eater Pro test, the tablet (without the keyboard) worked for 2 hours and 40 minutes. The integrated adapter allows you to quickly charge the Surface Go 3 up to about 80 percent per hour, which is not a bad thing. The charger also has a USB type A port that can be used to charge any device.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 specifications and software

Microsoft Surface Go 3 has been introduced in a variety of ways, but only one configuration is available online, at least during this review. It is similar to the one sent by Microsoft, and has 10th Gen Intel Pentium Gold 6500Y CPU, 8GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and 128GB SSD. This exception has an official price of $800 , although you should be able to find it a bit online.

Other alternatives can be found under a separate section of Microsoft’s website, called Surface for Business. This includes a separate base with 64GB of EMMC storage and 4GB of RAM, as well as a higher variant with an Intel Core i3-10100Y CPU. There is a separate LTE connection option for Surface for Business, and it comes with Windows 11 Pro. These varieties can be purchased from listed retailers, but they are not readily available in traditional e-commerce platforms.

Ideally, I think Microsoft has chosen the right configuration for consumer use, as the alternative is lower than EMMC storage and just 4GB of RAM, which is not suitable for Windows. The Core i3 CPU in high end variants does not offer much compared to Pentium Gold, only the maximum clock speed of CPU cores and GPU is slightly better integrated. All Surface Go 3 models include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.

In terms of software, Microsoft Surface Go 3 runs Windows 11 in S mode, which only allows you to download applications from the Microsoft Store and use the Microsoft Edge browser, safely and efficiently. You can easily switch to standard mode, which will allow you to install very well on any Windows system, but there is no going back.

There are not many pre-installed third-party applications, which is a refreshing change. You are getting a trial version of the Microsoft 365 Family. The full version of the Office and Student Home would have been great, and many of OEM’s Microsoft partners offer this on their laptops.

Before we move on, we should talk about some of the features you would like to purchase as well as Surface Go 3. Microsoft offers a standard Keyboard Cover ($145) or Signature Type Cover ( $210), made using Alcantara fabric.

Microsoft also sent me a Surface Pen, which cost an additional $130 in India. The pen operates with a single AAAA battery and can scan over the top of the tablet. This raises the price too high.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 Verdict

Microsoft Surface Go 3 may be the company’s most affordable Windows 2-in-1 tablet, but ( $210 ) is a lot of money. One common misconception is that you can get the best specific desktop computer at the same price, which is true, but you can’t use them as comfortably as tablets.

The variations I checked were sufficient in terms of performance. It also has a bright display, good speakers, a high quality web camera, and solid build quality. Battery life is a bit weak, and the accessories that most people want are very expensive.

If you add a stylus and keyboard, the Surface Go 3 will cost around $1000 , at which point the Lenovo Yoga Duet 7i looks like it could be a very attractive contract. It has better specs, which makes it superior to its competitor Surface Pro, and in addition, it includes a keyboard and stylus.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 is an excellent small tablet with a capacity of 2-in-1, but its battery life rate and the total cost of the entire package will prevent many people from taking action.
